As a science communicator, I had the job of translating the grim results of climate studies into news stories and media—a task that became freighted with despair. This small quilt was made in response to the human impact documented in Science: Syvitski, et al., 2021. Our imprint is so heavy that even if our species vanishes, it will be carved into the air and rock layers of Earth for all time. This piece is a tiny window into that overwhelming state. The fabric is woven from VHS tape, backed with cotton, bound with linen scraps, and minimally hand quilted.
