Pen and gouache on paper collage
I found my way into fine arts initially through the mediums of linocut and pen, two styles of which are heavily reliant on physical effort and time. Especially in this moment in history where things are faster and more mass produced than ever, the process of art that must be stippled in ballpoint pen or hand carved from linoleum holds a lot of importance in my practice. I pull a lot of inspiration from other artistic disciplines like music and poetry, as well as any of the more internal or undefinable aspects of life. Language can not be a one to one translation of experience, my art is, broadly, an attempt to capture what is lost there. This exhibition exists at the crossroads of two of the most evasive, hard to communicate pieces of my lived experience: identity and mental illness. They both are towering, ever present, and hard to define. They feel singular and isolating, and because of this are entwined in near every piece of my work.
