My work explores the geologic foundation of Big Sur, which has a richly varied geologic composition, characterized by precipitous slopes dropping into the Pacific Ocean. These factors contribute to a long history of landslides from the mountains into the sea. The development of Highway 1 in the 1930s was an incredible feat of engineering, but since then, these wild mountains have been consistently picking away at this new scar. My work assesses the degradation of both the road and the geology, and how they work in tandem to keep chipping away at each other. I ask the viewer to question how we use roads, and how our use of rural roads may affect our most beloved landscapes.
