We Are Family

Portraits of LGBTQ+ Families on the Central Coast

We Are Family is a photographic series depicting eight families on the Central Coast of California who represent our LGBTQ+ community. Created as a response to the surge in anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, including over 490 (and counting - an historically record-number) state bills limiting the rights of LGBTQ+ people in these first few months of 2023, an alarming increase in threats and violence against LGBTQ+ people, and direct attacks on family-friendly queer events and spaces, this project showcases the diversity, beauty, joy, love, and connection in our LGBTQ+ families here on the Central Coast. Portraits provide a window into families that belong here, thrive here, and are glorious in exactly who they are.

"We Are Family" draws its inspiration, particularly in my portion of the images, from the nostalgic imagery of the old Sears portrait studios. However, I have modernized and infused the concept with a renewed sense of authenticity and joy. As a photographer, I vividly remember the discomfort of being rigidly posed alongside my own family in those photographs. This personal experience compelled me to create a professional yet enjoyable experience that authentically captures the true essence of family.

In this series, I interpret "family" as a group of individuals who offer unconditional love and accept one another wholeheartedly. They transcend the boundaries of blood relations, for family is not solely defined by genetics. True family comprises those who love you unconditionally, support you, and provide the necessary challenges for personal growth.

Throughout our daily lives, we often wear different masks and play various roles, but within the sanctuary of our homes, we yearn for the presence of loved ones who genuinely care. They are the ones who listen attentively, uplift us during challenging times, and hold us accountable, reminding us of our worth.

"We Are Family" celebrates these heartfelt connections, capturing candid and spontaneous moments that reflect the authenticity of family life. Through my lens, I aim to convey the beauty of these relationships, emphasizing the genuine love and support that nourishes our souls. This series invites viewers to reflect on their own experiences and cherish the profound impact that family has on our well-being. By shedding light on the power of unconditional love, "We Are Family" serves as a reminder that the presence of loved ones can transform even the toughest days into moments of solace and joy, transcending the boundaries of blood to encompass the family we choose.

A family can take on many different forms, as does a portrait. My perspective on this project was to challenge and perhaps redefine expectations of the family portrait and what “family” represents. Typical, atypical, built and rebuilt, the family to me is a connection and a love between people that runs deep. Thus, I wanted to capture beyond just the image of a family, but a moment within that family, filled with personality and authenticity.

I visited locations that were hand-selected by each family to represent a place that meant something of significance to them and/or that they felt comfortable being in as an LGTBQ+ family. I didn’t ask them to pose, but listened to them talk about how they met, family traditions, or tease each other. I didn’t use any external lighting or staged settings, letting each moment unfold as it naturally would. I didn’t try to capture perfect photos, I tried to capture stories.

Spending time with each family was a unique and joyous experience. No two photos turned out anything alike, reflecting the individual character of every family unit represented. I hope viewers take a moment to step into the world of each photograph, find the beauty in the natural moments and connection depicted, and reflect on their own notions of family, love, and support.
